2007 Chehaw Council Pinewood Derby Rules
Pinewood derby is a creative and exciting activity that allows boys and families to come together and have fun. The following rules are a guideline and allow for car modifications in accordance with official scout policy.
Length, Width, Clearance and Car Kits

Maximum overall width (including wheels and axles) shall not exceed 2 ¾".·
Minimum width between wheels shall be 1 ¾" so car will clear the center guide strips.·
Minimum clearance between bottom of car and track shall be 3/8" so car will clear center guide strip.·
Maximum length of car shall not exceed 7".·
The wheel base (distance between front and rear axles) may be changed provided they comply with official scout policy.·
The car kit must be officially licensed by the Boy Scouts of America, which are available at any Boy Scout regional office, Scout shop or online at www.Scoutstuff.org. Cars purchased already completed from other scouts or online from sites such as Amazon.com or Ebay.com will be disqualified.·
Cars built from kits other than those available through the above venues will be disqualified.Weight and Appearance

Weight of car shall not exceed 5 ounces. The readings of the Official Race Scale will be final. The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood or metal only, provided it is firmly affixed to the car. No loose materials of any kind are permitted in or on the car.·
Mercury shall not be used for adding weight to the car, as it is a potential health hazard.·
Details such as steering wheel, driver, spoiler, decals, painting and interior details are permissible provided these details do not exceed the maximum length, width and weight specifications.·
Cars with wet paint will not be accepted.
Wheels and Axles

Only the official Scout Grand Prix wheels and axles can be used. Wheels and axles can not be modified; only in accordance with official scout policy.·
Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited.·
The car shall not ride on any type of springs.·
The car must be freewheeling with no starting device or other propulsion.Lubrication
·
Only dry powdered lubricants such as graphite can be used.·
Cars may be lubricated prior to inspection only. No further lubrication will be permitted.
Ground Rules
·
This race is open to all Cub Scouts and Webelo Scouts registered in the Chehaw Council.·
Cars must have been made within this year (after September 2006). Cars made in a previous year will not be permitted (A scout is Honest and Trustworthy).·
The race will be double elimination conducted according to age classification.·
If a car jumps off the track, the heat will be run again. If the same car jumps off the track a second time, it will automatically lose the heat.·
If a car leaves its lane and interferes with another car, the heat will be run again. If the same car leaves its lane a second time and interferes with another car, the heat will be run again without the interfering car. The interfering car will automatically lose the heat.·
If a car suffers a mechanical problem (i.e. loses an axle, breaks a wheel, etc.) and a repair can be accomplished in a reasonable time under the supervision of an official inspection judge the heat will be run again. If damaged car is unable to run, the car will automatically loose the heat.·
There will be judges and possibly an electronic finish line. The JUDGES must agree on the winner or the heat will be run again.·
Only race officials and boys racing will be permitted into the registration and track inspection and disputes.
Inspection and Disputes

Each car must pass a technical inspection by the Official Inspection Team before it may compete. The Inspection Team has the right to disqualify those cars, which do not meet the B.S.A. Pinewood Derby Rules. Car owners will be informed of the violations and given opportunity to correct those violations.·
Any participation (including the parent of the participant) has the right of appeal to the Race Committee who by majority vote will be the final judge of these rules. In case of a tie vote, the decision of the Race Committee Chairperson will be final.·
Ungentlemanly or unsportsmanlike conduct by any participant or member or the audience will be grounds for expulsion from the competition and/or the race area.·
Cars certified by the Official Inspection Team cannot be uncertified.
